Claudia Battistin

Claudia Battistin is a Senior Data Scientist at Simula Research Laboratory, recognized for her expertise in AI and her commitment to safe implementation of artificial intelligence across the private and public sectors.

Her foundational work is rooted in Computational Neuroscience, where she earned her Ph.D. from NTNU and the Kavli Institute. Collaborating with Nobel laureates Edvard and May-Britt Moser, her research advanced the understanding of neural encoding of behavior, focusing on navigation. Claudia discovered that the information your brain uses to figure out where you are (your location, how fast you’re moving, and which way you’re going) isn’t just kept in the brain’s “GPS center.” Instead, this movement and location data is also relayed to the outer brain (the cortex), suggesting it is used to control your actual movements and how you process what you sense.

Claudia has dedicated over a decade to leveraging her expertise in brain networks and pattern recognition to drive societal innovation through AI. Her work spans critical sectors, including healthcare, where she led research to enhance the Norwegian cervical cancer screening program by developing models to identify high-risk participant profiles. In the energy sector, she deployed machine learning models to monitor the integrity of industrial-geological interfaces, ensuring containment and preventing environmental risks. Her contributions in autonomous communication networks also earned her a victory at the Google Hackathon at DTW 2025, hosted by TM Forum.

Of note is the machine learning-based fish sorting system she developed in 2022 with the Berlevåg Hunting and Fishing organization (BJFF) to combat the invasive pink salmon in Norwegian rivers. This project has garnered international acclaim, including a GSMA GLOMO Award (MWC Barcelona 2024), a Top 10 finish in the UN ITU SDG Action Awards (2023), and the Neurons Award Special Jury Prize (World AI Cannes Festival 2022).

Beyond her research, Claudia brings strategic experience, having served as AI Program Director at Telenor. There she played a key role in informing large-scale AI implementation, by releasing company-wide standards for system architecture, security risks and development of Generative AI and by establishing company AI benchmarks. The unique mix of deep technical expertise and strategic insight qualifies Claudia to provide guidance to C-level execs around AI adoption through targeted workshops.

In the last few years Claudia has focused on trustworthy AI, including explainable AI, uncertainty estimation and security of large language models. Her mission is to move beyond the hype, ensuring that advanced AI technology conforms to high ethical standards, while delivering tangible value.

At AI+ Claudia is one of the speakers at AI+Business.
