Magnar Kvalvik

Magnar is a specialist in audio description (AD) and media accessibility. Since 2007, he has been at the forefront of making visual content accessible to the blind and visually impaired. Holding a Master’s degree in Media Studies from the University of Oslo, with a specialization in film theory, Magnar combines deep academic insight with extensive technical understanding.

His versatile portfolio includes audio describing feature films for cinema, television series, educational content, and public sector information films. He is also a pioneer in live accessibility, providing real-time descriptions for theater productions, conferences and seminars. He manages the entire production chain—from crafting descriptive scripts to studio recording, audio editing and final mixing. He possesses a comprehensive understanding of the distribution of AD, including secondary audio tracks for web, dedicated cinema files, and live-streamed audio for stage events.

Throughout 2025, Magnar conducted extensive research into the capabilities and limitations of the existing AI-tools for audio description. This work provided him with a unique vantage point on the current technological landscape, specifically identifying the critical gaps in how AI handles visual sequencing and the nuances of moving images. At AI+2026, Magnar will demonstrate the complex challenges facing modern audio description and present a potential solution for the future of the field.
