Norwegian Nuclear Decommissioning (NND) is a state agency under the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Fisheries. Its primary responsibilities include:

  1. Research Reactor Decommissioning: In 2018 and 2019, the two research reactors in Norway were permanently taken out of operation. NND will execute the safe decommissioning of research reactors in Norway. Currently, the independent Institute for Energy Technology (IFE) owns and is responsible for the research reactors. However, ownership and responsibility will eventually transition to NND.
  2. Nuclear Waste Management: NND will handle the safe storage, handling, and disposal of nuclear waste in Norway.
  3. Long-Term Planning: NND is still in a build-up phase, dedicating time and resources to planning and organizational development. Once fully operational and licensed by the Norwegian radiation and nuclear safety authority (DSA), NND will be the single point of contact for handling nuclear waste created in Norway.

NND is committed to safely decommission the research reactors and dispose of the nuclear waste in Norway. This process takes 20-25 years and will enable the reuse of the reactor sites for other purposes.

It is also responsible for building and operating new facilities for the long-term management of radioactive waste, ensuring its safety for present and future generations. While not actively working with AI, the agency is open to exploring any technology that can help achieve its mission, including artificial intelligence, robotics, and digitalization.

How do you use AI in the agency?

At the moment it is sparsely used. But we are seeking ways to safely utilize the possibilities.

What goals does the agency have for the future?

Our goal is to fulfill our mission which is to ensure the safe and responsible decommissioning of nuclear facilities in Norway, ensuring long-term safety and environmental protection

Why have you chosen to sponsor the AI+ conference?

It is important for NND to be a part of initiatives like the AI+ conference. Both to support the initiative as such and to get inspiration on how to work better with AI
