NND seeks safe, digital solutions for nuclear decommissioning and waste management

Illustration of NND’s proposed activities. PHOTO: NND

Norwegian Nuclear Decommissioning (NND) is a state agency under the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Fisheries. Its primary responsibilities include:

  1. Research Reactor Decommissioning: In 2018 and 2019, the two research reactors in Norway were permanently taken out of operation. NND will execute the safe decommissioning of research reactors in Norway. Currently, the independent Institute for Energy Technology (IFE) owns and is responsible for the research reactors. However, ownership and responsibility will eventually transition to NND.
  2. Nuclear Waste Management: NND will handle the safe storage, handling, and disposal of nuclear waste in Norway.
  3. Long-Term Planning: NND is still in a build-up phase, dedicating time and resources to planning and organizational development. Once fully operational and licensed by the Norwegian radiation and nuclear safety authority (DSA), NND will be the single point of contact for handling nuclear waste created in Norway.

NND is committed to safely decommission the research reactors and dispose of the nuclear waste in Norway. This process takes 20-25 years and will enable the reuse of the reactor sites for other purposes.

It is also responsible for building and operating new facilities for the long-term management of radioactive waste, ensuring its safety for present and future generations. While not actively working with AI, the agency is open to exploring any technology that can help achieve its mission, including artificial intelligence, robotics, and digitalization.

How do you use AI in the agency?

At the moment it is sparsely used. But we are seeking ways to safely utilize the possibilities.

What goals does the agency have for the future?

Our goal is to fulfill our mission which is to ensure the safe and responsible decommissioning of nuclear facilities in Norway, ensuring long-term safety and environmental protection

Why have you chosen to sponsor the AI+ conference?

It is important for NND to be a part of initiatives like the AI+ conference. Both to support the initiative as such and to get inspiration on how to work better with AI

Datatjenesten helps structure your company data to get the most out of your new AI tools

Part of the Datatjenesten team. PHOTO: Datatjenesten.

Datatjenesten has witnessed and adapted to the rapid changes in technology over four decades, expanding its services and expertise to meet the diverse needs of its customers. Today, the IT company leverages AI to optimize its cloud infrastructure, improve its cybersecurity, automate its workflows, and provide tailored solutions to its customers across various industries from Båtsfjord to Shanghai.

Datatjenesten is a complete service provider of IT and communication services to the corporate market, delivering everything from the phone in your pocket to your cloud-based server needs – and everything in between. Its main market is between Halden and Oslo, but as a solid supplier with local roots for over 40 years, Datatjenesten’s customer base has gradually extended to all corners of the world. Today, they have 21 highly motivated employees, with the ownership structure distributed among most of them. “It’s a model we strongly believe in, and it fosters both engagement and pride in the workplace”, says Karl Jørgen Weme, CTO of Datatjenesten.

We started our company back in 1982 and have recently celebrated 40 years in the industry. It is something we are very proud of. 40 years is a long time in any industry and it wasn’t as obvious back then what lay ahead of us – and the tech oriented world we live in today. We have adopted through the years, adding more services and competence and is today a 40-something in our prime.

Karl Jørgen Weme, CTO, Datatjenesten

Datatjenesten is divided into four departments: Sales, ERP, Support, and Technical. They have expertise in a variety of services and needs that their customers require, often taking on the role of customers’ IT department to build close relationships and understand their challenges and desires.

How do you use AI in the company?

Karl Jørgen Weme, CTO of Datatjenesten. PHOTO: Datatjenesten.

– At Datatjenesten, we utilize off the shelf AI powered tools in a wide range of applications. We have for a long time benefited from built-in AI capabilities in our IT security offerings, which looks for pattern recognition for suspicious behavior of users, abnormal activity from applications and network traffic. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) help us accelerate and automate the quick decision-making process needed to identify and respond to advanced cyber threats. In 2023, we started using ChatGPT based tools such as Copilot, and they have made a difference in how we work. Copilot helps us draft scripts that we can use in our IT management tools, such as automating tasks, troubleshooting issues, or gathering data. It saves us a lot of time and effort of tedious tasks.

Tell about a recent AI-related success story from your company or an exciting project you are working on.

– With the release of Copilot for Microsoft 365 in Norway, we started an internal project to learn how this application works, so we can both use it ourselves and be positioned to help our customers. Instead of exclusively using its own dataset or publicly available information, Copilot can utilize our own data in Microsoft 365. This means it will be able to use your emails, documents and more to help you be productive.

Because of this, we’ve learned a lot about how we need to assess and confirm if our own data is structured in good way and that access permissions to all data is sufficient. Once data structuring is ready, it’s like having a very skilled secretary or co-worker. It can write documents for you, do research, brainstorm with you and more. I was really impressed with the Copilot for Microsoft 365 feature in Microsoft Teams. For instance, the digital meeting solution, where this tool can transcribe everything that is said during a meeting. Then later it can make meeting notes and summarize them for you.  Also, if you ask Copilot questions about the meeting, and it will make great conclusions about what was said and concluded.

What goals does the company have for the future?

– As CTO, I don’t have any plan to create or implement AI on our own. But we will continue to make strategic decisions where we move our IT systems and processes to modern tools where we can make use of software developers who apply AI to those tools or specific tasks. As a partner for many great developing companies, I feel we are in a good position.

Our slogan says a lot about who we are: “Big enough to deliver, small enough to care.”

Karl Jørgen Weme, CTO, Datatjenesten

Why have you chosen to sponsor the AI+ conference?

– Datatjenesten has been working with IT systems for a long time, gradually implementing AI. Even before it was “thing”. AI has long made its way into both ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) software and generally within standard office support, and what we have seen so far barely scratch the surface of what to come and expect in the future. Datatjenesten serves corporate clients across a wide range of industries, but they all have in common the need for support regarding the use of IT systems and how to interact with AI functionality in those systems. We often take on the role of our customer’s IT department.

Living and working so close to one of Norway’s most powerful AI competency environments, it was exciting to become a member of the Cluster for Applied AI. We see the value of having this environment available not least because it opens for exploring new business opportunities. At the AI+ conference, we have a platform that strongly contributes to the development of AI for the benefit of us and our customers, and therefore, we have chosen to contribute sponsor funds to this event in 2024.

Norway’s top tech law firm reveals how AI boosts their business

Part of Simonsen Vogt Wiig’s TMT-team. PHOTO: Simonsen Vogt Wiig.

Simonsen Vogt Wiig is a law firm in Norway with a team of 185 lawyers, specializing in business law and have a strong focus on technology.

Their foremost position in the technology, media and telecom (TMT) sector is validated by prestigious rankings, including a Band 1 rating by Chambers and Partners and Tier 1 in Legal 500 within TMT.

Simonsen Vogt Wiig aims to be the go-to firm for tech suppliers, buyers, and investors, offering services beyond tech law, also including mergers and acquisitions, financing, labor law, and more.

How do you use AI in the company?

We’re now witnessing significant benefits in terms of efficiency and quality by using Large Language Models. These are some of the use-cases:

Text Enhancement: Instead of relying on AI for initial drafts, we craft comprehensive documents and then employ AI to refine and elevate the language, ensuring precision and clarity that align with our high standards.

Concise Text Generation: With carefully crafted prompts, AI assists us in creating succinct text elements, such as individual contract clauses, streamlining our workflow and enhancing our competitive edge.

Text Interpretation: Legal text interpretation is a domain where creativity is key. Surprisingly, AI has demonstrated a valuable capacity to present multiple interpretations, offering a fresh perspective on legal analysis.

Document Translation: We began with simple chat interactions. Now, we’ve progressed to uploading entire documents for translation, preserving original formatting. We still meticulously review each translation for accuracy.

We also use other digital tools, for instance:

  • tools for process risk analyses to better present and show the anticipated outcome of legal disputes (Eperoto).
  • recently we started with a tool that provides timeline functionally that is automatically created when providing several documents (Juristic).
  • create legal structures based on information from company registries (Juristic).
  • Furthermore, we are sometimes using the AI tool Luminance for Discovery cases to search for pertinent information in large collections of documents.

We are piloting private ChatGPT installation, hosted on Microsoft Azure and localized in the UK. This GDPR-compliant installation allows us to interact with AI without the need to anonymize data, ensuring client confidentiality while exploring the capabilities of ChatGPT and other technologies.

What goals does the company have for the future?

As the number of AI-applications is enormous and changing constantly we have a multiple track strategy. We aim at Microsoft Copilot for general use, a legal chatbot based on Azure Open AI and we keep looking at best-of-breed legal AI-applications for drafting, clause library, legal research and automation purposes.

Looking ahead, we believe that legal resources and services behind paywalls will be more effectively used, using AI. We also believe that the development of specialized contract drafting tools will mature.

Our approach remains cautious yet proactive, as we pilot new tools before fully integrating them into our practice.

Why have you chosen to sponsor the AI+ conference?

Our sponsorship of the AI+ conference stems from a positive experience last year and the belief that it is an excellent opportunity to connect with AI professionals. We invite you to engage with us—whether it’s before, during, or after the conference, through LinkedIn or email, we’re open to conversations.

Computas: Generative AI is transforming the way we solve problems and create value for businesses

At AI+, Ida Ryland and Dharshini Tharmarajan will share insights on how Computas has helped clients create business value with generative AI in their keynote “From hype to applied AI – Real AI examples from Norwegian businesses”.

Dharshini Tharmarajan (left) and Ida Ryland, CTO for Computas Trondheim. PHOTO: Computas

Computas, a Nordic IT and AI solutions provider, pioneered applied artificial intelligence in Norway. Today the employees have developed a strong expertise not only on AI, but also cloud technology, big data and application development. The company delivers value-adding solutions benefiting the public for both the public and private sector, and their expertise lies especially in public administration, health, energy and logistics.

Our interdisciplinary teams offer the expertise required throughout the digitization process. We work closely with our customers to develop tailor-made solutions with high usability.

Ida Ryland, CTO Computas Trondheim

Computas was established in Norway in 1985, initially as a subsidiary of Det Norske Veritas (now DNV GL) working with AI. Today the company is 100% owned by its 350 employees, and has offices in Oslo, Trondheim, Malmø, Copenhagen and Bucharest.

Watch the video about the story of Computas – which also gives an overview of AI’s history

How do you use AI in the company?

AI has been part of our DNA since we were founded in 1985. We were actually the first company in Norway to deliver systems based on applied artificial intelligence! This has been a sustainable foundation for the development and growth of the company, along with the focus on big data and cloud-based solutions.

We are very excited to see how AI has gained renewed relevance through today’s focus on generative AI and are already helping lots of companies with different use cases. We are partners with both Google and Microsoft, and have a strong in-house expert environment on AI. However, we are also very focused on the foundation you need to succeed with AI – for example a cloud strategy and control of your data.

Ida Ryland, CTO of Computas Trondheim

Tell us about a recent AI-related success story from your company or an exciting project you are working on.

We are working on several interesting AI-projects for our customers, many of them using generative AI. For example, Computas recently helped a company streamline sales orders that come in by email. This customer received many orders on a daily basis that employees had to manually enter into their system. With the help of generative AI, we could take unstructured data from these emails (for example name of customer, ordered products, number of items, delivery information etc.), structure it using a LLM, and automatically enter the structured data into their order system. This now saves the customer hours of manual labour.

Another interesting case we are currently working on is helping a customer responsible for maintenance of critical infrastructure. They want to use generative AI to recognize patterns and abnormalities from video content, which could give them automatic notifications on equipment malfunction or maintenance needs.

What goals does the company have for the future?

We want people to experience Computas as a company that takes part in creating meaningful solutions for people, for society and for customers – in a way that creates excitement! Digitalization and AI is an important part of the solution, and we want to help our customers succeed with innovative, efficient and ethical use of AI.

Why have you chosen to sponsor the AI+ conference?

We are coming to AI+ as a platinum sponsor for the second year in the row and are very excited! Last year’s conference was great, and we have big expectations for this year as well. We do this because AI is more relevant than ever. Not only do we want to share our expertise and experience, we are also eager to learn from others that we’ll meet at AI+!

Facts about the company:

Kantega uses AI to help customers build business critical software systems

Kantega explores how AI solutions based on customers’ own data can give businesses lasting competitive edges. The Norwegian IT consulting company is using AI language models like GPT-4 to develop virtual assistants and recently developed a new data and analytics platform for Enova.

Kantega’s employees at a team gathering in 2023. PHOTO: Kantega

Kantega aims to be a leading provider of applied AI solutions and services in Norway. In addition to their AI experts, the company has a broad range of expertise ranging from data scientists, data engineers, cloud architects, UX designers, full stack developers, as well as consultants with deep skills in areas such as innovation and business development, security, system integration and test and quality management.

Their customers are predominantly in domains such as bank and finance, public sector, mobility, and green energy.

Kantega is an IT consulting company which is 100% owned by the employees. The company’s mission is to help their customers build business critical software systems.

How do you use AI in the company?

We use AI in many ways in the software we develop, depending on our customers’ needs. Examples include training and using machine learning models to predict default on bank loans and using computer vision to identify objects in a video stream.

Currently we are involved in several projects where large language models (e.g. GPT-4) are combined with proprietary knowledge bases to create value-added services such as virtual assistants.

Together with our customers we explore how AI-enabled solutions based on proprietary data can provide lasting competitive advantages for their business. We offer AI courses for business executives and managers, AI feasibility studies, and AI pilot projects, that help businesses and organisations to understand their potential and where they can elevate using AI and data.

Listen to our Project Manager, Tore Lie, explaining why AI+ 2024 is a must-attend event:

The international conference on applied artificial intelligence (AI) will be held for the fifth time on April 17th and 18th next year – and the topic is becoming more relevant by the day. It’s challenging to stay in the forefront of such rapid development!

In 2024, we’ll shine a light on how to control the use of foundation models (like ChatGPT) and other AI tools that challenge the way we work. For example: How will the EU’s AI Act affect businesses and public services?

AI+ 2023 – another great conference on applied AI

Earlier this week, Halden once again became the epicentre of applied AI in Norway by hosting the annual conference on applied artificial intelligence called AI+, bringing together industry, tech, and researchers from the field of AI.

The AI+ conference has become one of the most important events in Norway for applied artificial intelligence. AI+ brings together professionals from various industries, including academia, business, and research, to share their knowledge and ideas on the latest advancements in AI technology and its applications.

The conference is held in the town of Halden, and this year’s edition was attended by 270 physical participants and 130 digital participants. The event featured great speakers from leading companies around the world and Norway. These speakers included representatives from HUB Ocean, Google, Microsoft, Silo AI, Völur, Computas AS, INTOTO, E.ON, and DNV, among others.

AI written speech, of course

The opening day of the conference featured speeches from Nikolai Astrup, former minister of digitalization in Norway, and Ruth Astrid L. Sæter, the conference host. Astrup’s speech was particularly interesting as it was fully written by the popular AI software ChatGPT by OpenAI, which provided a good laugh when revealed. The conference covered various topics ranging from challenges faced in different industries to how AI can solve these challenges. The speakers provided great insights into the world of machine learning and data.

Huge export opportunities

The second day of the conference featured a morning seminar by Abelia, which discussed how AI can be the next big Norwegian export and how the Nordic region has many of the needed prerequisites to succeed in AI. This was followed by parallel sessions presented by the organizers of AI+. The conference offered a great platform for professionals to share their ideas, insights, and experiences with others in the field.

Applied artificial intelligence is crucial for solving real-world problems and improving the efficiency of various industries. It can help organizations make better decisions, automate processes, and improve their overall performance. The AI+ conference is an excellent opportunity for professionals in the field to learn about the latest advancements and exchange ideas and knowledge.

Will we see you in 2024?

AI+ features great speakers from leading companies around the world and Norway, covering various topics ranging from challenges faced in different industries to how AI can solve these challenges. The event demonstrates the importance of applied artificial intelligence in improving the efficiency of various industries and solving real-world problems. It is a great opportunity for academia, business, and research to meet and exchange ideas, and we will make sure to be an important event in the field of AI in the coming years.
